With its striking, papery husks glowing like tiny lanterns, Chinese Lantern (Physalis alkekengi) adds an air of mystery and charm to any garden. This perennial plant, native to Asia and Europe, is known for its unique, bright orange calyxes that surround small, lantern-shaped fruit, giving the appearance of little glowing lights hanging from its branches.
Originally cultivated for its ornamental beauty, the Chinese Lantern thrives in well-drained soil and full sun, growing to a height of about 2–3 feet. The plant blooms in summer, but it’s in late fall when the lanterns truly shine, creating an enchanting display that lingers even after the frost has arrived.
Though often used in dried arrangements, where the lanterns retain their vivid color and texture, Chinese Lantern also has medicinal properties. It has been traditionally used in herbal remedies, though caution is needed, as some parts of the plant are toxic when consumed.
It’s best to grow Chinese Lantern in confined spaces, as the plant can spread rampantly and become invasive if left unchecked. Whether as a living, glowing feature in a contained garden area or a dried centerpiece in your home, the Chinese Lantern brings a touch of magic and old-world charm, lighting up your garden even after the sun sets.
